On Friday August 1, 2008, four year old Matthew was involved in a tragic incident and lost his right leg. Matthew was playing in the yard of his one of his mother's acquaintances in Swan Quarter, North Carolina when he was struck by a riding lawn mower. First responders from nearby agencies were able to stabilize Matthew and take him to a nearby hospital. His was quickly air-lifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, North Carolina, where surgeons performed emergency surgery. They were able to save his life, but not his leg. Matthew's right leg was amputated above the knee. After a week in the hospital Matthew was released to begin physical therapy. Two months later, Matthew was fitted for his first "robot leg" and within a few weeks he was walking again. Matthew’s family and friends continue to reassure him daily that he can do and be anything his heart desires.
